The Scheller College of Business at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia is seeking a Research Associate with a principal focus on privacy and cybersecurity. This position will work with Professor Peter Swire, who has been the White House Chief Counselor for Privacy and served on President Obama’s Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technology. The focus of the position is on research and writing at the intersection of law, policy, and technology. Principal tasks include: research and writing for the first draft of papers or books, conducting literature reviews, and finding relevant citations. The selected candidate may support overall research efforts such as web page content and maintenance and managerial assistance with conferences and speakers. The position may also serve as a research assistant for privacy and cybersecurity classes.
A Juris Doctor (J.D.) is the preferred degree, with zero to three years of experience, although not required. Applicants with graduate training in a subject relevant to information technology, privacy, or security will be considered. A Bachelor’s degree is the minimum degree required. All candidates should have a keen interest in the subject matter of privacy and cybersecurity. The salary is competitive with leading research universities.
Expected research topics in 2015 and 2016 include: (1) Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties and related mechanisms for cross-border sharing of electronic evidence such as emails across national borders; (2) encryption and the current government concerns that law enforcement agencies are “going dark”; and (3) updating of the textbook for the Certified Information Privacy Professional – U.S. examination of the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
This opportunity will be housed in the Law and Ethics group in the College, where we currently have six research-active faculty, two lecturers, and one other Research Associate. This position will also coordinate closely with the Georgia Tech Information Security Center, a globally prominent center for cybersecurity research, and with other Colleges of the Institute as needed.
